Chapter 1: Palpitate
The sound of pounding keys and the occasional flicker of the computer screen was the only thing keeping Light awake. Sure, he could have just told Ryuzaki he was too tired to work and have gone to bed. That is, of course, if you forget about the four foot chain that linked Light to Mr. Insomniac.
Light could bet his arm that Ryuzaki was enjoy every moment of his suffering. He could hear it in his tone when Ryuzaki asked him what he though Kira's sleeping habits were. The words 'fuck you' did come to mind, but knowing Ryuzaki, he would just take that as more non-existent proof that he was Kira.
Light jerked out of his half sleep at the sound of the soft chuckle to his right. Taking his last strength, Light shot a glare at his 'friend,' before giving into the urge to yawn.
“Yagami-kun, It may be to your benefit if I were to research in bed?”
It wasn’t a question and Light know it. If he said no, it would be like he didn’t want to admit to having a weakness that Ryuzaki didn’t, which in turn made him seem like Kira. If he admitted to needed more sleep, then Ryuzaki would only think he was doing it to not seem like Kira. It truly was a no win situation for him. Although, if he didn’t get some sleep soon, he wouldn’t be any use to the investigation.
Light sighed, putting aside his own pride, and nodded his head. The slight widening of Ryuzaki’s eyes were the only thing that gave away his surprise. Light couldn’t help but feel some morbid satisfaction at the sight. ‘Serves him right for keeping me up all hours of the night playing mind game with me.’ Light thought standing up, waiting for Ryuzaki to follow.
Light waited for him to grab his portable laptop along with a bag of junk food before pulling him along to their shared bedroom, which was too far away from the main research room in Light's opinion, who thought he was going to pass out before he got there. What normally seemed like a small hallway was becoming annoyingly long.
Ryuzaki was not helping matters either. Every glace Ryuzaki gave him felt like he was being examined under a magnifying glass. To say the least, it was very disturbing to his sleep starved mind.
‘It has to be all the sweet foods he eats. Maybe I can convince Watari to buy everything sugar free.’
Obviously the lack of sleep was really getting to him, because if his mind was working properly, he would remember L’s vindictive reasoning skills to find everything he did related to him being Kira.
“Yagami-kun,” Ryuzaki’s voice broke through Light’s train of thought. “I was wondering, where are you taking us?”
Light paused and looked back at Ryuzaki strangely. Was this another trick or something, but how would this raise his percentage of being Kira? Light couldn’t see one, either because there wasn’t one or because his mind wouldn’t focus, but after a moments peaceful silence he felt safe to answer such a ridicules question.
“To our room, Ryuzaki. You know, for that foreign thing normal people like to call sleep!” Light began to move again, but stopped when Ryuzaki spoke again.
“You passed it already," he said knowingly, pointing behind them with his free hand.
Light paused, then looked behind him in the direction of Ryuzaki’s finger. Sure enough, the door leading to L’s room was there. The sugary hand print on the light brown wood was a dead give away, even to Light’s sleep fogged mind.
He wasn’t sure if he was mad or not as he trudged along to the door. All Light cared about at that moment was curling up in a soft bed and sleeping, possibly forever. The sight of the two twin beds next to each other as Light opened the door was like heaven. It didn’t take him long before the was laying face down in a pillow, shutting his eyes.
Not a moment later, Light felt a poke on his arm. He shrugged it off and continued to dig deeper into his pillow.
Another poke, but his time to his back, had Light groaning and muttering into his pillow words of annoyance he couldn’t even understand and where probably not entirely appropriate.
The next poke was accompanied by his name.
Giving up on being nice, Light lifted his head out of the pillow long enough to yell, "Get. Into. Your. Bed. And. Sleep," before dropping back onto his pillow and falling into a hopefully peaceful sleep.
